At the age of 17, Kyo joined his first band, Gesshoku. In this band he went by the nickname Yoma. He went by the nickname Hotoma when he joined his next band, Visnu.Then he joined Masquerade. It was when he joined Haijin Kurobara Zoku that he met up with drummer, Shinya, and bassist, Kisaki. It was here that he changed his nickname to Kyo and that one has stuck for the duration of his music career which is still going strong. The three left Haijin Kurbara Zoku and formed their own band called La:Sadies. They were soon joined by Rythmn Guitarist, Die, and Lead Guitarist, Kaoru. They wanted bigger and better things, but Kisaki did not want anything to do with it. He preferred the indies scene, so he left and Toshiya was kidnapped to be their bassist and together the four of them formed the group we all know and love, Dir en Grey.

Kyo Kyo is the singer for Dir en grey. His real name is Nimura Tooru, he was born in Kyoto on Feb. 16, 1976, his blood type is B, and he stands at 5'3". His unique voice is clearly the most valuable asset to the band. He does singing, falsettos, screaming, moaning, roaring, crying, dying, choking, rapping, you name it, he can do it. Kyo makes short people everywhere proud with his powerful presence. Indeed, one has not lived until he has been glared at by Kyo. His hair has been pink, red, black, and blonde, the latter of which it currently is right now. Kyo enjoys being the "scary one," and though he may be likened to an evil china doll, he has a very kind face without the makeup. Kyo Facts • Kyo enjoys lying during interviews. One cannot trust what he says. • Kyo looks up to the vocalist Kiyoharu in the band Kuroyume. • When asked to list his 3 most precious things, Kyo responded with: 1. The cause is theorized to be a live version of Rasetsu Koku. While he was in the hospital, Kyo was not worried about delaying the tour or if these complications would cause problems with the band. He was just worried that he was going to get fat from the medicine. He also complained that the nurse giving him saline injections took the needle out of his arm very slowly, and he wanted her to do it fast. • When Kyo left the hospital, his bandmates threw him a party with champagne. • Kyo is allergic to flower pollen. • In his school days, Kyo claims he was in the Shogi (Japanese chess) club and also claims he never actually joined. His Personality
The first line of Shinya's horoscope describes him perfectly. He is a hard man to get to know because he doesn't like to talk about himself very often. If you ask the right question, he will tell a story from the past, but in most interviews, his favorite answer is "I don't know" or "Never thought about it". I can see where his monotonous answers could get on an interviewers nerves.
Shinya is very shy and rarely ever gets angry. This makes him an easy target for Die's consistent teasing. He likes to be alone, but when his friends are around they definitely know how to bring a smile to his lovely face.
I wonder if his inability to open up comes from a past pain. Did he open up to someone once before, only to be have it thrown back in his face? I don't know for sure, just guessing here. He always looks so sad to me.
Shinya is an all around nice guy with an appealing mystery that surrounds him. This is why he is my favorite out of the group. He does not seem to be the kind of guy that would ever purposely hurt anothers feelings and is compassionate toward others, especially his pup, Miyu.
His Appearance
For the longest time, Shinya has been the beautiful and elegant crossdresser of Dir en Grey. Then when the Macabre Album came around, he started looking for a more masculine look. He cut his hair short, stopped wearing dresses and cute mini skirts and doned a pair of leather pants, which is a main part of his warbrobe now a days.
His hair has been various shades of red and brown and black, long and short, straight and curled. He has even had long braids. Now his hair is blonde, short, and flipped out. It suits him well.
In the year of Missa, Shinya wore a light powdering of white make up. Then he went to a light dust of flesh color powder, lipstick, and eye makeup. Now he hardly wears any makeup at all. Maybe a little eyeliner, but that is about it.
Shinya has gone from elegant and beautiful, to sexy and hypnotizing.
His Performance
There is not a lot to say here. He is kind of stuck in the back pounding away, vigorously on his drums. He stated in an interview that he didn't mind being stuck in the back. He does what he loves and it suits his shy and secretive personality. He is still able to feel the energy of the crowd and enjoy the cheering crowds enthusiasm for their music.
His talent is incredible. I have heard it said that it is easier to find a good drummer than it is to find a drummer who can play meter, keeping a steady beat. He can do both, so that makes him even more talented. Shinya (born on February 24, in Osaka, Japan) is the drummer of Dir en grey. He has been with the band since its inception in 1997 and was previously a member of La:Sadie's. Shinya has composed a handful of songs for Dir en grey, his compositions alternating between melodic ("Hotarubi", "Fukai" and upbeat tunes ("Raison Detre", "Umbrella".
Equipement Shinya used to perform on drum kits by Ludwig and Yamaha Drums and has used cymbals by Alchemy (a cymbal line from Istanbul Agop). He is currently endorsed by Pearl in Japan and is using a Masters Retrospec kit. He has also used a version of this kit with roto-toms instead of traditional toms. He is also sponsored by Sabian cymbals and Remo drum heads, and because of this he uses mainly Sabian AA Metal-X Series cymbals and Remo Ambassador/Emperor series drum heads.

Toshiya is the most popular member of Dir en Grey. His goofy personality and sensitivity has captivated us all. He is very open about his emotions and his opinions which makes it easier to get to know him. He is an incredible man with a boyish charm. Whether it is backstage, or onstage, he loves to play around.
When Toshiya was younger, he was a shy child who liked to keep to himself and draw. He was picked on by bully's and most of his companions were girls. Now his is outgoing and his dearest friends are his four band companions.
He is not the most serious member of the band, but when it comes to their music he is very sincere. He loves to smile and laugh, which sets him apart from the others. He loves to pick on Shinya, just like Die does. I watched a clip where Toshiya is pretending to talk to the camera then forces the camera to turn to Shinya to whom turns away. Poor Shinya! He is very open about what he is feeling. My very favorite example of this is when Dir en Grey was performing Garden live. The crowd was singing the song along with them. Kyo stopped singing and the others stopped playing, except Shinya. Listening to the audience singing their song strikes an emotional string in all of them. But Toshiya is touched so much that he cries. It makes me want to cry right along with him. *hugs totchi in dreamland*
He cherishes his past. He is thankful for all of the people that he has met and for all that he has learned and experienced throughout his life. I read somewhere that Toshiya is easily attracted to a persons character. I agree with this. Look at his bandmates. They all possess a unique character and style.
I could go on and on. In short, Toshiya is a kind, emotional, and carefree man. I think this is why so many love him so much. Long Live Toshiya!
His Appearance
Toshiya is both beautiful and sexy. When Dir en Grey first started, Toshiya cross dressed along with Shinya. Later on, he got tired of it and did a total transformation.
Toshiya used to wear a lot of make up to accentuate his feminine features, mainly his eyes and lips. When he went to a more masculine look, he stopped wearig so much makeup and only enough to manly features. He no longer wears lipstick or foundation. It looks like a he wears no make up at all sometimes, which he really doesn't need to. He has a natural beauty, which rare and exotic.
.Toshiya's hair was long and black with blue streaks when the missa album was released. For the longest time, the blue streaks a major part of his appearance. Even when his hair was in dreads. It was short and an auburn color around the time of Gauze.Then he dyed his hair back to black and cut it to chin length with puffed out bangs for Macabre. When he doned the masculine look, he changed his hair to a brown color and cut it super short. Now is back to being black, thinner, and around should length. His current look is not my favorite, but if it is what he wants then more power to him.
As far as costumes are, Toshiya wears some of the greatest outfits. Toshiya likes to wear collars and outfits with high necklines. My particular favorites are the black and blue kimono with the spiked collar and matching striped stockings, and the black vinyl costume with the fake pointy *ummmm...* breast. He wore complicated suits of all sorts and styles. His style now is simple and comfortable with t-shirts and jeans.
His Performance
Toshiya is fun on and off the stage. He dances around the stage along with Die and Kaoru. Though he is positioned behind Kaoru on Kyo's right, he always moves forward and plays right in front of the audience. He loves to flip the crowd and the camera off, on the stage and in the PV's. He and Die are always messing around. There was one fanclub concert that Dir en Grey held and Die was wearing a gold rubber mask and kissing on Toshiya. It was amusing watching them. His Personality
A lot of us fangirls find Die incredibly sexy and his smile makes us all melt, but there is an intriguing mind in the pretty little head of his.He was the class representative for his highschool. He mentioned in an interview that he would like to go to college after his band days were over.
Die is outgoing and witty. He speaks up the most in interviews and is constantly picking fun at his fellow band mates, especially Shinya. He is quite often referred to as the "Joker" of the group.
As far as his horoscope is concerned, I only saw a few things that seemed to fit Die's fun-loving personality. Die does adapt to what is around him quickly. When he went to L.A. with the group, he developed a great love for the food he tasted there, while the others were having a hard time getting used to the weather. His hopes for the band are far and wide, but so are the hopes of the other band members. He is always noticing the things around him with a certain curiousity and somewhat philosophical point of view. He light mood and easy grin show his optimistic attitude.
His adventure in life is the band. They travel to various places, and he enjoys meeting new people and learning new things. Die is known to speak too much and to tease excessively. I find it easy to believe that he would have the tendency to over do it sometimes. Poor Shinya.
Now...how about the sex part? I do not know die personally, and he doesn't really speak of his love life (none of the group does), so this I cannot answer honestly. But he does love sports. His Appearance
You can always pick Die out of the group because of his bright red hair. In the beginning of Dir en Grey, his red main was long and large. As the years went on, his hair became shorter, spiked, and darker (though still red). He changed it once or twice, but nothing too drastic.
His make up is worn light which have enhanced his good looks. For the Kisou album, he hid his attractiveness with dark circles around the eyes and hollowed cheeks. He wore two types of black leather masks that covered a majority of his face.
As for his outfits, he tends to favor black leather and silver studs. My personal favorites is the outfit to the right. There is nothing better than Die in a pair of short shorts. ^_^ In some pics he wears very weird to very attractive suits.
I think out of all of the Dir en Grey members, Die's costumes are not as bizarre or ever changing. He changes the least. Well, except the style of his hair. The color red is the color of his zodiac, sagittarius.
His Performance
Die loves running off the stage and into the crowd. Once he dove into the crowd and came back missing his shirt. He just laughs about it. In a live performance he and totchi ran off stage, followed by Kyo, and you could see the bodyguards chasing after them to make sure the fans did not tear them apart.
He is very lively on the stage. Die, Toshiya, and Kaoru play around on the stage while Kyo entrances them with his lyrics. Its hard to keep track of them all, cause they move around so much. Jumping, running, and so on.
Die plays the acoustic guitar for songs like Okur no Oka. He gets to show off his talent in solos every so often, but mostly plays the rythmn parts. His hands never cease strumming the strings of his guitar and they move so fast that you cannot keep up with them. I read somewhere that Die has some of the most difficult tabs to play and his style is hard to copy.
Die adds a lot of spirit to the stage and is fun to watch as he riles up the crowd.

His Pesonality
Kaoru can be intimidating when being first met. I know he made Shinya nervous when they first met. I think this is why he is known to make the large decisions for the group, and is most likely the leader figure. He also has a lighter side, like the rest of the band members do. He teases, he laughs, and plays around, but he also demands respect from those around him. He is confident in who he is and what he does, same as Kyo.
In my opinion he is also the hardest to figure out, the most complicated, which is making this page extremely hard to write, so please bear with me. I think that even if I knew the man personally, I would not know how to put his personality in words.
He is serious about his music and his performance, but we will get into that later. Some find him conceited, for when asked what he loved most he anwered "me", but this is not so. He appreciates all that has been bestowed upon him and the beauty that is around him.
Aquarians are known to be stubborn and I can believe this is true about Kaoru, but I cannot really give a good example. He is a good man with a great talent that he loves to share with Dir en Grey's million of fans. Long Live Kaoru!
His Appearance In the day of Missa, his long locks were black with a blue hue. Then he died it his favorite color, Purple. And then pink. Now it is anywhere from blonde(not my favorite) and shades of brown. I watched an interview of them on KMTV from 2002, and I had a hard time telling Shinya and Kaoru apart. Their hair was almost the same color and was in their face. But when he smiled, I could tell it was him. I miss the days when his hair was purple. He has worn it long and straight, in braids, short and spikey, and even has sported a spiked mohawk.
His makeup has gotten lighter and lighter as the years went on. During Missa and Gauze he would wear a little of white foundation, black eyeliner and lipstick, black nail polish, and eyes make up. Then between Gauze and Macabre he only wore make up the defined his features.I think there was a time later on that he wore no make up at all.
Now onto his outfits. He likes his leather jackets and black leather outfits. He has worn a black and purple kimono-like gown. A jacket of red and white with a diamond pattern. An assortment of strange hats, like the one he wore in KR[cube]. Then a few strange suits, one sporting a scary red had on the shoulder.
His Performance
Kaoru plays a majority of the guitar solos for Dir en Grey. He takes his talent very serious and it is obvious when you watch his concentration when he plays on the stage. He moves around the least on the stage, but he does encourage the crowd with abrupt movements on the head and hands. Don't get me wrong though, he can act like a mischievous boy on the stage and jump around.
His narrow glare has become something of a signature look for him. You see it quite often on the stage while he is playing and gazing over the crowd of fans cheering them on. He is always bending over his guitar and rocking back and forth. In my opinion, it is his way of feeling the music. Kaoru (薫, Kaoru? , born February 17, 1974, in Hyōgo) is a Japanese musician and one of the guitarists of Dir en grey. He has been with the band since its inception in 1997 and was previously a member of La:Sadie's. He has composed most of Dir en grey's songs (at least up to the Vulgar album, at which individual credits for the music were dropped). His contributions display a fair amount of variety, ranging from slow ballads such as "Zakuro" to upbeat numbers like "Jessica". He performs many solos for the band, which vary strongly in feeling and tempo, similar to his compositions. Like the other members of the band, he uses guitar amplifiers and cabinets by Mesa Boogie.
Kaoru is endorsed by ESP Guitars in Japan, who provides him with most of his guitars, picks, and straps. In the past, Kaoru primarily used ESP Custom Shop guitars from his signature-series, Ganesa. Recently he has stopped using the Ganesa guitars and switched to the Viper series, in which he has his own custom model, the D-KV-420.Recently a limited edition edwards version of his D-KV is being sold.
ESP has released several replicas of Kaoru's signature guitars in Japan through the ESP and Edwards product lines. The ESP artist series offers replicas of the D-KV-420 and the Ganesa II. Edwards offers a miniature Ganesa and replicas of the Ganesa IV and VIII.
