Part 1 1. Can you prepare yourself for fame? Bill: [beaming in a good mood, with a big silver crucifix around the neck] No! Many people have tried to prepare us for success and said "It could be like a bold out of the blue." But ultimately, nobody has reckoned how it really becomes. Also we didn’t.
2. There is something like Star-Training, media-savvy... Bill: We have always refused ourselves against that. Labels like to try this out; they want to place you anyhow. We always said from the outset that we always want to say the truth as far as we can. We didn’t want to peg us as something. We wanted to go out, to peek what people are doing and answer like we always do.
3. Were there moments, when alertness overcharges you? Bill: There are moments, you wish for being the public gone! What is peeving me mighty, are paparazzi. I never imagined this that way. When people griped about it, I always used to think "Come on, it’s not that bad. People are interested in it." But meanwhile I find it really dreadful. Tom [with his legs apart, ´sunken´ into the chair, mumbling into his XXL T-shirt]: But they just are doing their jobs, too.
4. How far do they go with you, Bill? Bill: For example, they have taken a photo of me, on vacation, on the Maldives. Shot on the Jet Ski. Or else, when we are partying in the evening. They have taken a photo of us there and made a mountain out of a molehill, about how 17-year-olds sometimes are celebrating in the evening. What is rather common... Georg [bent forward, interested]: Show me a teenager in Germany who isn’t partying! Bill: It really peeves that things are getting exaggerated so much....
5. But that’s your job. Tom: Exactly.
6. A question for the fans: Does a teenager wearing a brace have any chance to reach you at all? In the recent past, Tom reported about a girl who came into his hotel room... Tom: I don’t want to give you a tip, but... [On request of the label we strike out Tom's tips] Bill: Please, do not write this!
7. No, don’t worry. Tom: This is not that difficult. We often are asked if we can imagine having a fan as girlfriend. In any case...
8. I actually meant how they have to obviate all the security staff... Bill: Of course we have safety measures when we are on the way. But when we are in the hotel room, we are unmitigated alone, without any big bodyguards. And they also do not stand in front of our door. Georg: They also do not sleep in our shower cubicle. Bill: With many things which we would like to do, the security staff determines. But this is something we have our will with. I don’t want this. I don’t want to be controlled, don’t want to explain where I am going to, because this is hobbling. I anyhow already have a little privacy, and here I want to do for what I feel like. I don’t want this control.
9. When fans really are opposite you, do they get out a word at all? Bill: Mostly not much. Then always nothing is occurring to them. But I can understand this. If I had met Nena at the age of ten, it would have happened to me the same way... Tom: Therefore, I already collect questions for many years, in case I meet Angelina Jolie sometime...
10. Actually, those girls also act without you. They also scream when you’re not there. Bill: Yes, but I hope they also scream when they hear a new song of us. Screaming is such a releasing feeling, too! Tom: You also scream when you are happy.
11. Do you feel free in your decisions? Tom: In decisions in any case yes. Georg: Definitely. Bill: We kind of scrambled for this a little bit. Especially when you’re young, you’re often not taken seriously. Like at school, in the past. Then older people say: "Oh come on, I already have so much experience." You always should listen to what you feel just now. Especially young people have an honest opinion. Tom: Above all, making mistakes simply belongs to it. Most of the people always want to exclude this, but... Bill [interrupts him, they continue this mutually]: We said from the outset, that we decide everything on ourselves, and we want to be included really everywhere, songs, concerts, we make the stage design on our own...
12. That’s a going down legend between pop stars, this "We do everything on our own..." Bill: Yes, but we really are like that. Tom [interrupts him]: That’s really such a stereotype, especially when you ask some *fake artists* which got jumbled together somehow "Are you doing everything on you own?" "Yes sure." Probably everybody says this... Bill: But you can trace back this better with us because our case history is known. And as you can see, this always was the style. I refused to accept from the outset when people said "Hey listen, we want it thus and thus ..."
13. Has anyone already wanted to determine the appearance concretely? "Get your hair cut, that’s better for the image?" Bill: When I had made a different haircut, for example when I had it short and then long, there was made enormous lots of noise about that! The label opined "Are you daft", and everyone all around said "No, your brand, you can’t do that. Oh God what will people say". Then there were shot new photos, and everyone was worried enormously, and I thought like "Hey, I just feel like that, it’ll be ok." I am a person who decides according to instinct. Then I just decide this and don’t ask anybody. Then sometimes there is made a lot of noise about that.
Part 2 14. Actually, hotel rooms are your first own den ... Bill: That's true.
15. But you have single rooms ... Bill: Yes. Georg: At the beginning double rooms. Bill: It also happened that we have slept in a foursome in one room. Georg: In the very past we slept in tents, when we were underway on concerts. Tom: As you have already said, hotel rooms are our first own apartments. When you are on the move all day long with so many people, you just got to have your own space.
16. Do you have any bizarre anecdotes about hotels to tell? Bill: We just had a bad experience! That was in France, we had a cockroach in a hotel ... Tom [interrupts his brother]: At the very beginning, where we were the third or fourth time in a hotel, we have watched people f***ing ... Bill [bethinks that the cockroach is not really rock'n'roll]: Ah, that was cool ... It is already an old story, but I like to remember it. That was in a hotel in Hamburg, and for half an hour we really have... Georg: It was biting cold, it was raining, and we had to go to a roof terrace, to watch it perfectly. Bill: We first thought somebody’s just changing clothes. It was terrific. And we saw them the next day at breakfast. Georg: Eventually, we gave the hotel room a ring. And the guy hung up totally inflamed with rage. Bill: Picked up the telephone receiver and straight hung up, because at that moment he just was … Georg: Then they turned off the light, and we considered whether to hand a Ten-euro note under the door.
17. Have you walloped the cockroach? Bill: Yes, we washed it away in the loo.
18. That doesn’t kill it ... Bill: [even bigger eyes and a nauseated hhmm]
19. When did being a star disappoint you for the first time? Tom: When we were at an awards event for the first time and went backstage. I think it was the “Comet”. Bill: You imagine it in a different way. Televised, you always see all these lights and those totally scrumptious made up people and then you come backstage and somehow ... Tom: ... and always everyone is privy: in front of the camera they say "It’s splendid here!", And then you go backstage ... Bill: And there is nothing! Backstage you see this glittering wall, and you go behind it, and then it’s just as thick as this [showing with his fingers two centimetres], and behind it all the cables are sagging. And you think to yourself that actually a lot of things are just fake! Georg: Everything’s paperboard. Bill: And the wardrobes, you always imagine ... Tom: But partially there’re also beautiful backstage areas. Georg: Well. Bill: Those are the things that we got used to. Now it’s nothing that surprises me .... Georg: In the past we have always thought, there's a Jacuzzi with a few women in it ... Bill: This is always told.
20. Then you have to let send to you the women. Would you describe yourselves as disenchanted? Tom, Georg: Nooo. Tom: Well, of course there are things where you certainly are disappointed. For example, the backstage areas ... Bill: I wouldn’t say disenchanted. We have learned, are more fledged. Of course we have realized much. And I also think it is cool that with 17 we go around and know how the wind blows. That’s a great experience.
21. Another question about the girls: When they yell like that, they actually do not mean you, but the stars, the image that you sale. Does it bother you? Georg: They really yell for us ... Tom: People know much about us. The yell not only for my dreadlocks ... Bill: There are also fans that you meet again and again, they are in several hotels, and you also have talked to them. They really got to know us, what we tell and what we do. They yell again the next time, nevertheless. Tom: They’re really interested in the person-in-itself.
22. Ok, what I mean is: Another, also vigorously acclaimed musician once said: "I am a Sex object, and I won’t ever come out." That sounded not really happy. Tom: Yes, this is bad, I am also a Sex object, too ... [Giggling and grunting]
23. You sometimes are quite strongly insulted, does it annoy you? Tom: I always think it’s okay. Of course nobody likes to be insulted. But the band isn’t really dealing with that. And I also think it would be pretty boring if all people like you. Just as I’d find it boring if everyone would just clap at our concerts. Then again, there are people who deal with us, specifically build placards... Georg: Make web pages ... Bill: The thing is that we do not know that since we are successful. Even as we were on stage at the age of ten, there were always people who meant "Children band." But in process of time, you have a thick skin. And if real criticism is dealt out in a particular case, you really should listen to that.
24. If Bill was offered a solo contract, what would happen? Tom: You have to answer that. Bill: Well, I also synchronized the film [ "Arthur and the Minimoys»]. Everyone has scope for development; everyone can also do his things. Many bands break up, because they’re [Tom tries to interrupt him, Bill wins] bound to that, mustn’t do anything, mustn’t out of that. All of us may also withdraw any time. If someone says "Now I want to paint a picture and make an exhibition or synchronize a movie or to play act" we talk about it. It is not that we keep it dark.
25. In the United States there is this 11-year-old singer Bianca Ryan, who is supposed to have a similarly early career as you had. If you could give her one piece of advice, what would that be? (
) Bill: Well, I wouldn’t give her any advice. I always hated when people say or advise something to me... Tom: That sounds so precocious. Bill: And first of all, it doesn’t help. Ultimately, you have to experience it all yourself. It is also much more exciting than when people tell you anything before and anticipate everything.
26. So there is nothing you could spare her? Bill: She has to give it a trial. We grew at any obstructions, anyway. Tom: You also have to fall down to stand up again.
Part 3 27. ( a few questions for all parents who are afraid that their son could ever use eyeliner) Bill how long to you need to look like that? Bill: not as long as you might think. When I get up in the morning… with teeth brushing and everything about 30 minutes… Georg: I need longer for that… Bill: … with make up Tom: I would take a shower for 30 minutes!
28 .do you also use eyeliner and nail polish in your sparetime? Bill: yes! I used to do that! But now when I walk through the streets I don’t wear make up at all, of course, to be as unobtrusive as possible. Then I’m wearing a hood and a scarf and stuff so that no one recognises me. Gustav: (out of the blue. You almost startle if he actually says something) even in summer… Bill: but I actually did that all the time. I went to school like that.
29 .how did the idea occur to you? Bill: honestly that was on carnival. I was dressed as a vampire. I think vampires and witched and stuff are really cool. I simply wanted it.
30. when did you use make up for your eyes for the first time? Bill: for how long is it now? ( looks at Tom) already six years (… so with eleven)
31 .what’s harder? To go on or off stage? Tom: on Gustav: after the gig is before the gig Bill: we are really nervous. Of course it’s sad to leave the stage after the concert. If I’m on stage once I could play there endlessly. Tom: the feeling you have are pretty various: when you go up on stage you are really excited and when you leave the stage you are completely… Georg: … relaxed. Tom: you have adrenaline in your body. But at the same time you are completely happy. you are seriously falling into a hole afterwards.
32 .if things are thrown on stage- what do u prefer: teddy bear or bra? Tom: actually I like both. Bill: but actually bras are better. And which boy doesn’t like to receive underwear?(he’s still smiling and makes you thing: teddy, teddy, teddy)
33. do you believe in life after death? Bill: I believe in something after death. Well we all are certain that you leave something here. I don’t think that you just leave and then your simply gone.
34. what do you mean by leaving something? Spiritually, your music? Bill: with us it’s certainly our music but I think everyone leave something. Interpersonal stuff. Tom: I also think that everyone is here for a certain purpose. And I also think that there’s something after death. Bill: I don’t know what is there but there is something!
35 .who cleans your rooms? Altogether: we! Georg: they are actually never untidy cause we’re never there. Tom: and I cant stand it if other people are looking through my stuff… Bill: mothers often like to arrange stuff and then to put it somewhere… Tom: but I have my own system in my chaos.
36 .did you ever disguised yourselves to walk across the streets? As you just mentioned with hood and scarf? Bill: not with an artificial moustache or something but rather wrapping up ourselves with track suit and hood…
37. but that actually also raises attention, doesn’t it? Bill: in summer you have a problem. But for me usually a cap is all I need so that you can’t see my hair. Tom: in summer it’s a bit unpractical for me. The only chance for me to hide my hair is under a woollen hat. Bill: wigs are another possibility.
38. if you could be someone else, who would you be? Georg: well I’d definitely like to be a girl for one or two days… Bill: and I’d like to be Brat Pitt for one day cause then I could be together with Angelina Jolie… Tom: I’d like to be one of the Olsen twins. Then I could go bathing with the other one and at night sharing one bed with her…
39. ( the famous question from the questionnaire of Marcel Proust): do u have historical heroes? Bill: Hmmm, no.
